ECHMB has over the past nine (9) years pioneered a financial literacy initiative aimed at prospective homeowners. To date ECHMB has conducted an annual “Home Ownership Day Event” in all of its member countries, except Montserrat. At these Events ECHMB has generally had the Prime Minister or other senior Government Minister to outline the government’s policy directions for the housing sector. The Home Ownership Day Events have been organized to promote prudent borrowing practices and personal financial management among consumers. But in light of the countries vulnerability to natural hazards, such as hurricanes, the Event has also been used as a forum for professionals in the field of engineering, construction, planning and architecture to outline the best practices in the building construction and building maintenance to enhance the value of a house.
